Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor dies

Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor dies

Screen legend Dame Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79.

The iconic double Oscar-winning actress is said to have passed away at her LA home. There is no reason given for her death as yet, but she was being treated for symptoms of heart failure and had a long history of ill health. One of Hollywood's most endearing stars, Taylor is known for both her classic films like 'Cleopatra', 'Cat on A Hot Tin Roof' and 'Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?' as well as her colourful private life, which included her volatile relationship with Richard Burton, one of her seven husbands.

Taylor met Burton during filming of 1963's 'Cleopatra' - at the time the most expensive film ever made. They would go on to star in 12 films together. She wed Burton in 1964, before divorcing him and remarrying in 1975. Her other husbands were Conrad Hilton, Michael Wilding, Michael Todd, Eddie Fisher, John Warner and Larry Fortensky.

She survived a deadly rare strain of pneumonia in 1961 and nearly died after another bout of pneumonia in the 1990s. She also overcame addictions to both alcohol and painkillers, and survived surgery for a benign brain tumour in 1997.

Despite her ill health she was an avid campaigner for her Aids charity which she set up in 1991 in memory of fellow screen icon Rock Hudson.

Taylor won her Academy Awards for 'Butterfield 8' and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
